Episode 6 - Bringing head and heart to teams

Show Notes

For civil engineering General Manager Lucy Hovanec, purpose can breathe life into teams, and in order to lead, self-knowledge is crucial.

In this discussion, Lucy shares with Dan and Pia her toolkit for working with teams across cultural divides and around the world, to help them wake up excited to come to work:

  • Asking questions to make sure everyone is aligned on the task at hand
  • Assessing the climate of a team and creating conditions for success
  • Using the Example, Impact, Change model of delivering feedback

Meet the guests

Lucy Hovanec is the General Manager of Delivery Phase Services at GHD, a 10,000 strong employee-owned, multi-disciplinary consultancy with a stated vision and a determination to address humanity’s most urgent needs: to ensure water, energy and urbanisation are made sustainable for generations to come. As General Manager, Lucy is growing an internal start up team from two to 200+ team members supporting clients to move into Future Energy. She applies the 3Ws and 3Cs leadership models she learnt early on in her career with her team on a daily basis and strongly believes that if you align like-purposed people towards a common vision sharing similar values, magic can happen.
Lucy’s 17 year career in consulting, international development and business development has seen her lead teams in far flung places such as Tanzania, Cambodia, Myanmar and Papua New Guinea. She has led remote teams from Canberra that extend across the Pacific, into Asia and across Australia.
Lucy’s favourite team is made up of her Slovak husband and three energetic children under 8 with whom lives, skis and bike rides. She looks forward to the distant future where she can sleep uninterrupted through the night.
