Clarity

The shared understanding of goals, roles, and expectations
What is Clarity?
This element is the first of the three Conditions for Team success. It defines the teams why, what, how and who.

Why is Clarity important?
Without clarity, there is no unity of purpose and resources are not aligned to a clear goal so are often stretched. Building Clarity unites team members.

Tips for improving Clarity in your team

  1. Why: what is the defining purpose of your team? Imagine that the team did not exist – what would happen? Your purpose lies in the answer to that question!
  2. What: this is the goal of the team, the ‘light on the hill’ that everyone is moving towards together. It’s a team goal, not a sum of individual goals and teams notoriously over-estimate how clear this goal is so make sure that you have measures so that you know when you get there.
  3. How: this could be called the strategy of the team but don’t over-complicate it. What are the three or four pillars of activity that will get you to your goal. These should me cross-functional to bring team members together in execution.
  4. Who: role clarity has two parts – individual and interdependence. First, are you clear on what each person’s responsibilities are? Secondly, is everyone clear how they should work together? Initiate regular 1:1 conversations to build and maintain this clarity.
